The scientists were getting nowhere — except maybe in each other's way. McKay would have been able to fix the problem, but McKay had been dead for almost a month now.

The portrayal of John here, his refusal to believe that Rodney really is gone, the hope... An angsty, but oh-so satisfying read.

"Maybe it's just regular, good old fashioned burnout," John suggested, although he knew in his heart he was clutching at straws. "Maybe all you need is a vacation."

"'Maybe all you need is a vacation'," Rodney parroted. "Please. I'm not stupid, you know." Then he looked stricken. "I'm not stupid yet."

At the end of "Tao of Rodney" there's a kind of Flowers for Algernon moment wherein Rodney realizes he can't make sense anymore out of the work he did while he was on his way to Ascension. This story takes that idea and runs with it. It's long, plotty, fantastic, believable, heartbreaking, awesome, and happymaking, all rolled into one.

Not your average John and Rodney friendship story: sad, heart wrenching, a lot of hurt and zero comfort. Poor John. Poor Rodney.

The monks fluttered around them, keeping their distance and wringing their hands. "You should not take him yet," one said. "He is too fragile," but goddammit, they were going home; John was betting they could still reverse the damage. "He is not yet his new self," another moaned, and John couldn't help biting out, "I don't want his new self! I want him just like he was!"

I can't think of much to say that wouldn't be a spoiler, and I'd hate to spoil anything here. Read this. Just-- read it.

Rodney's powering on ahead of him, forcing John to jog to catch up, and doesn't deign to answer at first. "Oh god how I missed saturated fats. Salt! Sweet, sweet monosodium glutamates." He starts piling food onto a tray. "When did the mess start serving biscotti? This is good – and well, yes, Chaya, yes, there was noncorporeal slapping, I am a petty, petty man – seriously, this biscotti is good, you should try some."

Sweet and funny and hot. Rodney bitch-slaps Chaya and John's bewildered.
