Title: In a park one universe removed
Characters: Jeannie Miller, Madison Miller, Harry Sullivan (Dr.Who)
Genre: gen, crossover
Rating: PG
Episode: "McKay and Mrs Miller"
Summary: Harry Sullivan walks into a bar park and meets... Jeannie Miller.
Notes: Written for Remix Redux 11. The original story is Park Life by paranoidangel, which I definitely recommend as it draws a really well thought-out picture of "our" universe's Jeannie after her recent experiences.

Afterward, he feels fantastic. He feels light, airy, buoyant. Free: he feels free. Like he's flying, all without ever setting foot inside the jumper. So really, he knows right away that something's wrong.

This hurts in the best possible way, and it's perfectly John Sheppard.

Character(s) or Pairing(s): John/Rodney
Warnings: None
Wordcount or filesize: ~ 5,874
Summary or quote: John was stuck in the infirmary for days while his body painfully changed back to human inch by inch. Every scale he lost was another small victory and how crazy was his life that he had scales? He was so lost in the pain of the transformation that he really didn’t notice the other change at first.
Recommended because: It is a very awesome look inside everyone minds, due to the powers that John received when he'd been turned into a bug.

"Always bickering," Old Elizabeth sighs, but she doesn't sound annoyed. Sort of... a fond exasperation, a warmth Rodney hadn't expected.

The scientists were getting nowhere — except maybe in each other's way. McKay would have been able to fix the problem, but McKay had been dead for almost a month now.

The portrayal of John here, his refusal to believe that Rodney really is gone, the hope... An angsty, but oh-so satisfying read.

It wasn't that Rodney was ignoring him, or that he seemed unhappy with him. He was just so damn distant. If any of those officer training courses had been worth their weight in paper over the years, John would say he was depressed. Which wasn't a terrible stretch, after all. Losing Carson, and Elizabeth, and Carson again. The disastrous end of his relationship with Katie. Almost losing Jeannie. Not to mention all the other stress and trauma they went through on practically a daily basis, and yeah, he could see why Rodney might be a little down.

Recommended because...
This is what happened, after. Rodney tries to deal, John tries to understand and gets it all wrong, and yeah-- It's so very them.

Because there's no way he should have done this. Because leaving aside the fact Rodney is a guy, he's also Rodney, and that's just...John can't really find a good comparison beyond like taking on a hive ship with nothing but a peashooter.
Not that John hasn't done some reckless things, time and again, but this just takes the effing cake.

Recommended because...
John's self-denial is so in tune with his character, and Rodney just gets him, like only Rodney can. And seriously, who doesn't want to see how John and Rodney take Ronon and Teyla shopping in San Francisco?

John raises his bottle in a silent toast and takes another drink.
"Saturday night," Rodney says after a moment.
"Yeah," John says.
"And we're out here together."
"Yeah," John says again, a touch more warily this time.

"Yeah, no one here but us," John agrees, wondering where exactly the point might be and how long it will take Rodney to get to it.

This story really gets into the heads of the characters and showcases their friendship in a way I wish more stories would. This episode gets far too little love for the depth of material available to explore, and though this story is short, it definitely does a great job of offering closure for the events of the episode.

"Maybe it's just regular, good old fashioned burnout," John suggested, although he knew in his heart he was clutching at straws. "Maybe all you need is a vacation."

"'Maybe all you need is a vacation'," Rodney parroted. "Please. I'm not stupid, you know." Then he looked stricken. "I'm not stupid yet."

Recommended because...

At the end of "Tao of Rodney" there's a kind of Flowers for Algernon moment wherein Rodney realizes he can't make sense anymore out of the work he did while he was on his way to Ascension. This story takes that idea and runs with it. It's long, plotty, fantastic, believable, heartbreaking, awesome, and happymaking, all rolled into one.
